11.2 Dependent Clauses and Sepearable-Prefix Verbs
As you know, the prefix of a
separable-prefix verb occurs at the end of an independent clause.
Rolf steht immer früh auf.
Rolf always gets up early.
In a dependent clause, the prefix
is attached to the verb form, which is placed at the end of the clause.
Rolf
ist immer müde, wenn er früh aufsteht.
Rolf is always tired when he gets
up early.
Helga,
bitte mach das Fenster nicht auf!
Es wird kalt, wenn du es aufmachst.
Helga, please don’t open the
window. It gets cold when you open it.
When there are 2 verbs in a
dependent clause, such as a modal verb and an infinitive, the modal verb
comes last, following the infinitive.

can’t do anything.

kann.
